Curious George Cookies

I have always been a fan of the adorable Curious George, so I’m really excited to have this opportunity to collaborate with Hulu to make some fun cookies of this adventurous monkey. The big news is that all nine seasons of Curious George are now streaming only on Hulu, and I’m helping them celebrate! Since I love using cookies as illustration, I decided to recreate some of George’s exciting escapades in cookie form!

Here’s a look behind the scenes …

If you follow me on Instagram, you probably know that I love using cutout cookie letters in my photos. For the letters shown here, I created an easy template using a piece of thin cardboard (like an old cake box), and cut carefully around each letter with an X-acto knife. Then I hand-cut the letters from sugar cookie dough (my recipe here), which I rolled out and froze first so it would be easy to cut. For a quicker option, you can use letter cookie cutters! After the cookies were baked and cooled, I piped a line of royal icing around the edge of each cookie (recipe here) and used a small brush and thinned out icing to fill them in with color.

Curious George is always getting into mischief! One of my favorite memories is the time George tried to grab one balloon from the vendor but ends up grabbing the entire bunch and flying off into the sky! I also love the image of George peeking out from under the big yellow hat. I added clouds, balloons and buzzing bees to create my own colorful scenes with George.

I used a balloon-shaped cookie cutter and brightly-colored royal icing to create the balloons. To decorate them like I did, outline each cookie with piped royal icing and then use a small paintbrush to fill in the shapes with slightly thinner icing. I tend to thin my icing with a few drops of pasteurized liquid egg whites, but you can also use water. While the icing is still wet, pipe a tiny line or dot of white onto the balloon to depict a reflection mark.

Curious George is swinging into your home! Hulu now has all 9 seasons (108 episodes) of the animated TV series, as well as the animated film Curious George 2: Follow That Monkey. Visit Hulu.com to start a free 1-month trial, available for a limited time.
